Your donations to The Arc of Florida go directly to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. (I/DD)
Clifford Nehr is one of 240 self-advocates able to attend The Arc of Florida's 60th Anniversary Convention in October of 2013 in Gainesville because of the generosity of our donors. Look at any photo of Clifford at the convention and you will see a smile that spreads from ear to ear. It's the smile of a young man who was attending his first conference away from the watchful eyes of his parents or brothers. It's the smile of a young man enjoying life to the max with activities that included learning life skills, experiencing drum therapy, visiting a butterfly farm and rocking out at a gala dance. At our events, self-advocates are VIPs and we build memories that last for a lifetime.
Your donations give self-advocates like Clifford a voice at Florida's Capitol in Tallahassee. Funds are used to pay for travel expenses so Floridians with I/DD can advocate for themselves at The Capitol. During the 2013 Florida Legislative Session, self-advocates successfully changed a state law by organizing the End the R-word in Florida campaign. The Intellectual Disabilities Bill, passed unanimously by legislators and signed into law by the governor, removes the phrase "mental retardation" from state statutes and replaces it with "intellectual disabilities." Your donations provide critical dental care for Floridians with I/DD. The Arc of Florida recruited dentists at 120 practices across the state to perform x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, root canals, crowns, extractions and dentures for self-advocates who can't afford dental care.
